These dog days of summer help us appreciate the inventors of air conditioning.  If you are ever in Kent, Connecticut, stop by the Sloane Stanley Museum, where among dozens of steam-powered machines is a steam-powered saw that was used to cut blocks of ice out of lakes and rivers at the turn of the century for early refrigeration.

For a solution to the common problem of what to do when renovating an old home with low ceilings, please see 'Low Ceilings, Old Home-No Problem'

I hate to admit it, but it is time to start thinking about the fall. The good news is that Fine Home Source, our yearly special home show, (gathering of experts and craftspeople) will be showcasing everything from old-fashioned screen doors to brand new wine cellars, from hand made Windsor chairs to the latest in home-audio.  Please mark your calendars for a great show September 25th, 10am to 5pm, in Millbrook, New York.
